What About Now is the twelfth studio album release by 80s rock icons Bon Jovi. It is their first release of new material since their Greatest Hits album from 2010. With another

Australian tour lined up for later this year, what does their latest album have to offer?

Bon Jovi’s sound has changed over the years from their hairband hits of the 80s to gradually becoming more about soft rock. And What About Now continues the trend. Throughout the album you can hear the balladic lyrics, similar to their earlier hits, as well as slight country tunes reminiscent of their experimental country album Lost Highway.

As a longtime Bon Jovi fan, I personally find the album quite enjoyable to listen too with upbeat inspirational sounding songs such as the lead single that opens the album, Because We Can.

On the down side however, various complaints about other recent Bon Jovi albums seem to ring through What About Now typically because of repetitive sounding tracks. The track Army of One comes to mind with its repetitive hooks and verses adding further to recent criticism of their later records.

The track Beautiful World may also bring public disapproval to the band, sounding eerily similar to Matchbox Twenty’s  How Far We’ve Come. Doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it though!

Personally, my favourite track is Thick as Theives, which basically represents the mainstay of any Bon Jovi album – the slow love ballad. The other personal favourite of mine is included on the deluxe edition from guitarist Richie Sambora’s solo album. The track is Every Road Leads Home to You, which showcases the talents of other members of the band.

Bon Jovi’s latest offering What About Now is an album that caters for their long-time fans, such as myself. However with most of the album appearing to be quite similar to pretty much any of their records since Bounce, Bon Jovi appears to be clutching at straws in terms of gathering new fans. Yet, with a strong fanbase like theirs, who needs new fans?!
