‘About Time’ Film Review
About Time (2013)
Starring: Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams, Bill Nighy & Tom Hollander
Writen & Directed by: Richard Curtis
Romantic Comedy / Drama
Summary: 21 year old Tim Lake discovers that he, like the other males in his family, have the ability to revisit moments from their past and change them to alter the present day outcome. Tim then uses his special gift to win over Mary, the woman of his dreams.
About Time is not a game changing film. It is essentially another time-travel style romantic comedy portrayed in similar fashion to The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009) and Click (2006). Nonetheless, a strong cast and positive message ensure that it is a pleasant watch. Sure enough, the first part of the film sees the usual and predictable rom-com style scenarios. However, the shift in tone just after the halfway mark is what really gives the story individuality and solid meaning and this second part is where the performances from the acting ensemble really shine. Bill Nighy, in particular, has the standout role of the film due to his ability to flawlessly weave snappy dialogue with genuine heartfelt moments into his character.
The film is let down by its production at times with the hand held camera becoming quite a distraction during pivotal scenes. These moments are redeemed through the fantastic soundtrack which features songs by The Killers and Nick Cave.
There are no extras on the DVD release of About Time which is disappointing. A commentary by such an established director like Curtis would have provided great insight into the making of the film.
Overall, About Time is a delightful film which combines moments of humor and heart to show that every moment is special, even if you don’t have the ability to relive it time and time again.
