Get Hard Film Review

When millionaire James King (Will Ferrell) is about to join the elite club of the super-rich, he is arrested and sentenced to 10 years in maximum security prison, San Quintin. Given one month of freedom to get his affairs in order, James King turns to Darnell Lewis (Kevin Hart) to help prepare him for life behind bars.

Get Hard tackles many social and racial taboos in the current United States, although this movie is immature, it doesn’t mean the movie isn’t funny. Get Hard is not for everyone, but if you’re up for some stupid, low-brow humour then stars Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart deliver the goods.

James King is the kind of thoughtless idiot who is easy for viewers to root for, much like Will Ferrell’s previous character Ron Burgundy in Anchorman. Although we have seen Ferrell play this character before it is different when paired up with comedian Kevin Hart, who does surprisingly well playing off Ferrell’s broad character, James King.

That being said, not all of the humor lands quite so well, when the jokes hit, they make you burst out loud, but when they don’t, they become cringe worthy. A good example being the repetitive rape jokes, whilst a movie about an entitled white man going to prison is going to address the issue of rape, there are funnier ways to do so than by repeating the same joke.

Overall Get Hard does well at straddling the line between funny and insulting and that’s what it is going for. The story line is witless and the comedy occasionally teeters into bad taste, however Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart provide some big laughs.

Get Hard receives a 3 out of 5 stars.
