On the evening of the 15th of April, hundreds of Canberrans arrived at Honkytonks in Garema Place to participate in the inaugural Autumn Night Markets.

Although the weather was predicted to be a relatively cold seven degrees in the evening, it did not prevent the crowd from enjoying the event.

Upon arrival, the vibe of the markets was great.  Nineties RnB played, drinks flowed, people chatted and money was spent.  The market place was lit up with fairy lights which added to the chilled atmosphere.

While the marketplace itself was quite small, the ten or so stalls did not lack variety.  Although there was a subtle theme of vintage and retro hipster, the stalls produced items for people of all ages and personalities. Items such as second hand clothing, wooden bow ties, hand-made hats, stationary and home-made foods were all on hand for purchase.

One of the most unique stalls at the Night Markets was ‘Garden Gifts,’ which sold hand-decorated cactus plants and small moss terrariums.

Lily, the owner of the business, was grateful for the opportunity the markets provided to showcase her work to the Canberra Community.

“I sell my products at other markets but this is another chance for me to get my business out there and to make new customers,” Lily said.

Lily is a university student and became interested in plant decorating as a way to de-stress and relax during hectic semesters.

“As a student, it is also a good way to make some extra money!” said Lily.

Honkytonks, the host of the evening, made it very clear through their Facebook page that the aim of the Autumn Night Markets was to support the local businesses in Canberra.

“It’s a great way to meet and support some of Canberra’s local designers, artists and general creative cool cats!  There’s something the be found for everyone and by shopping local you’re helping to support the hard working, small business owners of Canberra!” Honkytonks said on their Facebook event page.

The markets produced quality products and enticed some interesting people into coming along as both vendors and customers, all but guaranteeing that next year’s Autumn Night Markets will be even bigger and better.
