The Water Diviner – Movie Review

Every once in a while, a movie is released that really resonates with a person. For me, that was The Water Diviner, directed by, and starring Russell Crowe. The movie is based off the book by the same name. Throughout the film, viewers follow the story of Joshua Connor, who, after the death of his wife, is on a mission to find his three sons who have been fighting in Gallipoli.

Viewers watch Connor go to Turkey where he makes an unlikely friend in a young boy. The boy helps him get to Gallipoli and that is where the story really begins.

While targeted to an Australian audience (the film is yet to be released in the US), even those without knowledge of World War One would find the film touching. I enjoyed that the film not only focused on the story of the war but also the personal life of Connor.

The editorial qualities of the film are also impressive. A number of flashbacks are done extremely well and help the viewer piece together the story.

It isn’t until right at the end of the film where it all comes together. While it isn’t the fairytale ending that is often popular in films, it is more than satisfactory as it shows the reality of the ANZACS who were fighting in Gallipoli.

Overall, the film was touching and relatable. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Story by Elly Mackay.
