An Hour Without Power

At 8:30 pm people all over the world spend an hour without power to help save the earth.

The movement originated in Sydney in 2007 but now Earth Hour has spread to 162 countries and is becoming more and more famous each year.

Not only can you help combat climate change, but also raise awareness by participating in Earth Hour.

But if you really have no clue what to do without power for an hour here’s a list to help you out.

Top 10 Things to Do for an Hour Without Power

  1. Have a candle-lit picnic.  There’s no better way to promote saving the environment than by going out and spending some time in it.
  2. Attend a local event held specifically for Earth Hour.  There are events being hosted all over Australia and you can find one near you online.
  3. Host your own event. Whether you do it with just friends or actually register to host an event on the website is up to you.  But if you want to make a change, it’s go big or go home, right?
  4. Go camping.  There’s no better way to promote saving the environment than by going out and spending some time in it. Earth Hour is just an hour long, but the whole idea of the movement is to get people to stop using so much energy every day, not just once a year. Make your Earth Hour an all nighter!
  5. Post a pic with #earthhour2015 and #yourpower.  This can help raise awareness of Earth Hour and get your friends interested in it as well. You have to participate if you’re going to post a picture.
  6. Read a book. Not in the dark, of course, but grab a candle or two and dive into a book for an hour.  You’ll be surprised at how far you can get into a book in just 60 minutes.
  7. Play manhunt.  You’re never too old for this.  It’s fun and you can really use the dark to your advantage.  Plus, you’ll get some exercise while you’re at it.
  8. Have a bonfire. It’s always a great time sitting around a fire, roasting marshmallows and telling stories with friends.  The fire is a natural light, so there’s no need to use any electricity. But don’t forget to notify your local fire brigade first.
  9. Sleep.  It’s not the most productive option but you won’t use any power.  Your lights will be off and you can accidentally help the environment by going to bed early.
  10. Spread the word.  Encourage others to turn their lights off for one hour by informing them about Earth Hour and the cause. One person can really make a difference and help share the cause.

Earth Hour 2016 will be held on March 26th from 8.30pm.
