Canberra’s Young Writers Put Pen to Paper for ‘FIRST’

FIRST

Since 1993, the University of Canberra’s Faculty of Arts and Design has published FIRST: an annual anthology of creative works composed by students.

Written, edited and designed entirely by students, FIRST has served as a starting point for young writers to publish their prose, poetry, comics and other creative works, as well as celebrate their developing skills with every passing year. Currently, the faculty is accepting submissions for their 2014 issue.

But what exactly is it like to be a young writer living in Canberra? Are writers constantly inspired by the city’s unique landscape and culture? How do writing students approach the vocational uncertainty that comes with a Bachelor of Writing?

Shane Strange, a tutor and lecturer of writing and literary studies at the University of Canberra, as well as Kaity Smith, a writing student, have expressed their thoughts on these questions, their own creative practice, and their city.
