Review: Frame of Mind – Sydney Dance Company

Frame of Mind by Sydney Dance Company was nothing short of a masterpiece. With only two dances performed during the 60 minute performance, it left me reeling for more. The simplicity of the whole performance was like a breath of fresh air.  In a day where crazy, over the top costumes and hair and make-up is considered fashionable, it was nice to see plain black dance attire and natural hair.  One prop was used in the entire performance and the set itself was kept rather plain.

As for the dancing, it pretty much spoke for itself.  Choreographers William Forsythe and Rafael Bonachela created a flawless routine from beginning to end and utilised all dancers to their full potential.  The execution of each movement was sharp and precise but in a way that flowed together, making each sequence seamless.  The lifts were exciting, the dancers’ technique was perfect and the chemistry between them was completely compelling.

The first half of the performance was a quintet that went for 26 minutes.  The emotions felt through the music titled “Jesus’ Blood Never Fails Me,” combined with the contemporary dancing was spectacular.  It captured the audience.  Various lifts and partner work was the highlight of this dance.  The level of dancing was so mature yet looked so effortless which is incredible considering the dancers had no breaks during their twenty-six minute performance.

The twenty or so dancers in the second half of the show brought so much energy which was a contrast from the first.  Through the mixture of solo’s, partner work and group dancing, each of which were perfectly in unison and looked effective, making the performance fully effective.  The music constantly changed which meant some parts of the dance were slower and more emotional and others were more upbeat.

Frame of Mind was completely professional from start to finish and worth every cent.
