Tommy Little – Enter The Weapon Canberra Comedy Festival 20.3.2015

Tommy Little visited Canberra as part of the Canberra Comedy Festival 2015 and performed to a sold out crowd for one show only.

Let me paint you a picture:

Tommy Little… Sold Out Show… Novotel Hotel… Conference Room.

Yep, a sold out conference room. Impressive, right?

Despite the less than impressive choice of venue, though quite intimate (front row and centre, aww yeah), Tommy had his audience laughing until they cried and I’m positive that I was not the only one. This may have only been his second time in Canberra, but Tommy has been performing at festivals and clubs around the country and overseas for years!

Tommy’s post on Instagram and Twitter right before his show was an accurate depiction of what was to be expected:

“Excited to rip Canberra a new one tonight. Also really hoping to be labelled the biggest thing to hit town since Floriade…”

His hour of stand-up titled, “Enter The Weapon” opens with DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s party album, ‘Turn Down For What’ and is based on exploring his failure, though some could argue success, to live up to his self-proclaimed nickname, “The Weapon”.

Throughout the show Tommy connected with his audience through personal stories that had them in stitches. Recalling the time he went sky diving with his friends to prove The Weapon’s far-from-graceful ‘falling-from-the-sky’ abilities and endearingly nicknaming his big, buff, and unimpressed sky diving instructor ‘Daddy’.

Re-calling examples and stories of his “weaponry” efforts throughout his life, Tommy has re-defined the meaning of the word “weapon”. His interpretation of the word is a term of endearment, like that one friend who does dumb things so badly that you can’t help but be impressed… “Oh, all of the dishes are dirty so you’re eating out of the pan? … What a weapon!”

However, this not-so-deadly weapon is definitely one to look out for – Tommy is funny, witty and quite pretty on the eyes. His ability to play off his audience is impressive as he makes his jokes up on the spot (and not always at the expense of his audience).

Tommy is popular around Australia, having performed at several Comedy Festivals, particularly in his hometown Melbourne, but for some reason (unbeknown to me) Tommy hasn’t established a wide fan-base here in Canberra. However, a sold-out show is still a sold-out show and I’m sure the “biggest thing to hit town since Floriade” will be back in no time!
