Daredevil Season 2: The Devil in Hell’s Kitchen is back with a vengeance

Marvel’s Daredevil had nothing to prove in the first season, with low expectations from fans after the very disappointing 2003 Daredevil movie starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. But after a terrific first season with kick-ass action and a great villain, could season 2 live up to the hype? To answer that question, yes it can.

Season 1 regularly featured some of the best choreographed action scenes on television, let alone in other super hero movies. The incredible fight choreography, brutal violence and complex characters are all back bigger and better in season 2.

Season 2, similar to the original season, has the running discussion of what being a hero actually means. Once again, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) battles not only with his nemeses but with his nagging fear that his actions outside of the law is making Hell’s kitchen worse and not better.

One of the many highlights in the debut season of Daredevil was the well-known hallway scene. Season 2 tries to better that scene with what seams to be a scene all in one take, where Daredevil fights a horde of criminals from the top flight of a staircase all the way down to the ground floor.  Here is a clip of that hallway scene from season 1 just to wet your appetite for what is to come in season 2.

What makes the new season a breath of fresh air is the different villain compared to Wilson Fisk in season 1. The Punisher is a very different nemesis compared to Wilson Fisk. Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) with his dark, brooding demeanor, and his terrible past that he was so desperate to hide was terrifying, monstrous and horrifically violent. But Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) as Frank Castle, a man quickly dubbed The Punisher, is a vigilante who aims to clean up Hell’s Kitchen by any means necessary, no matter how lethal the results. In a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel, Bernthal said he went full method for his role as the Punisher, which involved “a lot of isolation” and a strict commitment to “not having too much fun.” All that hard work paid off, with Frank Castle aka The Punisher being the highlight of the season.

Another improvement on season 1 are the fight scenes. The action scenes in the breakthrough season were darkly lit and therefore, it was very hard to see the action unfold. Season 2 learnt from its lesson, and the fight scenes in season 2 are portrayed in a more blue-light, making it easier to see the action at first hand.

When Marvel announced in 2013 that Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist would get their own TV shows on Netflix, it was also revealed that the heroes would eventually team up in a Defenders miniseries. Three seasons into Marvel’s Netflix Defenders experiment, with the success of Daredevil quickly bought it a second season but there’s no telling if we can expect a third, but we sure as hell hope so.

Daredevil season 2 was released on Friday, March 18 on Netflix Australia.
