Lights! Canberra! Action! award winners reflect on film festival experience and it’s assistance for their careers

“A Fortuitous Fable” director Jamie Robinson and actor Sam Williams have said whilst they have more work to do, the experience will assist them on their path to reach their dream careers.

Robinson, 20, says entering his film into ‘Lights! Canberra! Action!’ (LCA) won’t get him into the film industry single-handedly but it’s one of many steps he has to take.

“I don’t think it’ll help me get in [to the film industry] alone, it’s a nice step.

“It’s a single step in a long process that will eventually land me in a stable career in the industry”.

Robinson also said the motivation behind entering the film festival was to work on something outside of University and to have something that his peers don’t.

“It was to have something done on my own outside of university that I can have over my peers so I can stand out and differentiate myself within the industry.

“It’s nice that I have this under my belt, and it fills me with confidence that if I was to compete with someone within my year bracket I might have a leg-up”.

Williams, 20, says it’s important to have the film on his long list of acting experiences.

“With acting it’s always good having a extensive history of what you’ve done and the more varied it is the better, and being in the Best Student Film paints you in a good light”.

Being viewed by strangers can daunting according to Williams but it’s worth it because of the opportunity to make connections with other actors, directors and producers in the industry.

“Having everyone see your work and be judged is scary”, he said, “but the connections part will help me out the most because it’s just meeting people and saying ‘You’ve seen my work in this, can we put it somewhere else or can I use you in a different format’.

“As an actor, it’s all about doing stuff and as much as you can”.

LCA was part of Events ACT’s ‘Enlighten’ program and was attended by over 1000 people who saw 12 of Canberra’s best short films.

The attendance is small in comparison to last years event which saw up to 5000 walk through the gates, but overcast and rainy weather played a part in the lower than expected attendance.

“The Archive” produced, directed and written by James Hunter won the bulk of the awards including ‘Best Film’ which many thought were well deserved.
