The Forage – Event Coverage

Hundreds of Canberrans flocked to Barton on Saturday for The Forage street food showcase.

The seasonal festival kicked off for the first time this year, exhibiting endless amounts of produce from local cafes, food trucks, wineries and breweries in a unique setting outside the Little National Hotel.

The event also featured live music from local artists Georgia Bennett, Mickey Sulit and Jacqui Douglas, and entertainment from the Subsdance Dance Studio.

Creator of The Forage showcase, Belinda Neame believes the festival has the potential to change peoples perception of Canberra.

“It shows life and a real sense of community. It shows that Canberra really is at the top of the game when it comes to food and the awesome diversity we have. It shows that we are a really warm and welcoming community that embraces our locals. We’ve had so much cultural change in recent years and to anyone that has questioned it, that should come and experience Canberra now!”

Hackett resident, and University of Canberra student Joshua Ratnam attended the Forage for the first time on the weekend.

“It’s a really good opportunity to get an idea of decent businesses around Canberra. It’s important to support our local businesses and I think the event is a perfect opportunity for locals to get a taste of what’s out there,” he said.

“I’ll be back (at the Forage) later in the year, and will definitely be checking out some of the cafes again.”

Kim Prieto, part owner of the Lolo and Lola bakery emphasised the importance of the exposure the showcase has on small businesses.

“Its amazing to see so many local businesses in the same place. The festival gives us an opportunity to engage with the public and get our bakery more exposure,” she said.

“As a Filipino bakery, the majority of our customers are from the Philippines. Its good to see all different types of people trying our food today.”

The Forage highlights Canberra’s range of affordable and high quality products from local businesses and is likely to become a favourite food festival for the Canberra community.

Those who weren’t lucky enough to attend shouldn’t worry, the event will run another three times during the year.
