Worth the Wait? My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 Film Review

This year brings with it many long awaited film sequels. Firstly, the release of Zoolander 2 whose original hit film Zoolander was released back in 2001. The sequel to Disney’s Finding Nemo is soon to be released, Finding Dory. Audiences are still waiting twenty years on for the second installation of the 1996 film, Independence Day. And of course, the long awaited follow-up to the 2002 chick flick, My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

Like the original, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 follows the life of Toula Portokalos, played by Nia Vardalos. A mother whose only child is looking to leave for college, and a wife who is experiencing marital issues with her husband (John Corbett), while still working in her parent’s Greek restaurant. Different to the first film’s boy meets girl plot line. This film centres on Toula’s parents, Maria (Lainie Kazan) and Gus (Michael Constantine), who it turns out were never officially married. The romantic comedy follows the members of this large and loud family while they try to organise yet another Big Fat Greek wedding, this time for mum and dad.

The budget for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 was three times the amount of the original film. For that price you would expect three times the quality, however Rotten Tomatoes has given it an average rating of 4.6 out of 10.

To put that into perspective, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 scraped in a rating only just higher than the 1982 film Grease 2. Let that be a warning to potential viewers.

While My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 does have its funny moments and may even tug at your heart strings, the films lack of reference to the original, and the abundance of stereotypical Greek jokes has this viewer wishing they called it quits back in 2002. Hopefully Hollywood’s other long awaited sequels will be worth the wait.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is now available on iTunes.
