On International Women’s Day, 50/50 by 2030 Foundation director, Virginia Haussegger AM, officially launched the foundation’s new blog, BroadAgenda, at the University of Canberra.

The launch of BroadAgenda, on March 08, was attended by a mix of University of Canberra students and staff, including Vice Chancellor, Deep Saini, who spoke at the event.

BroadAgenda is an online blog which covers all areas related to gender equality, in particular, around the Asia-Pacific region. It features stories from academics, journalists, and politicians and welcomes submissions from all whom are interested.

Ms Haussegger says the blog has, “been created to feed a growing audience hungry for quality research and informed argument around the gendered nature of power, leadership and authority. We aim to build a bridge between academic research ‘silos’ and mainstream media, with a focus on public discourse”, she said.

The 50/50 by 2030 Foundation is based at the University of Canberra’s Institute for Governance and Policy Analysis (IGPA). The foundation aims to increase the representation of women in leadership roles in Australia and the Pacific, and achieve an even balance of genders in leadership positions in both the public and private sectors.

It is a part of a global initiative by the United Nations, and a number of similar foundations are located around the world.

Virginia Haussegger was appointed as the director of the Foundation in November last year and will also serve as the Editor in Chief of BroadAgenda. She is well-known for her long stance as presenter of ABC News in Canberra and as a vocal advocate for women’s rights. She has also been an adjunct professor at the University of Canberra since 2011.

Ms Haussgger has said that achieving the foundation’s aims is a ‘tremendous’ task, but that she cannot wait to get started.

Lucy Harrington, a UC student who attended the launch, said that “the event was really eye opening to the great work women can achieve, especially in our own backyard, UC.”
