What’s The Future Of Pokemon Gaming?

Ever since the mid-nineties, Pokémon has been played on Nintendo consoles, but with the release of the Pokémon Go application for the mobile phone receiving 100 million downloads in its first couple of months, will this change the way Pokémon games are played?

Pokémon roared onto the gaming scene in 1996 with Nintendo releasing Pokémon Red and Blue for its portable gaming console the Game Boy. This simple RPG game based on catching a crack team of Pokémon and training them to defeat the elite four sold over 46 million units world-wide.

20 years later the humble Gameboy has evolved into the Nintendo 3DS and there have been seven different versions of the Pokémon game. During this time Nintendo has been more then successful with the Pokémon gaming genre, with their latest version Pokémon Sun and Moon becoming the best-selling 3DS game in the portable console’s history.

With such a rich history and a dedicated following, Pokémon console games should be safe. Even when comparing the two, Pokémon Sun and Moon easily comes out the stronger with giving the user new and exciting Pokémon to catch and evolve. It also lets you trade and battle directly with friends and people from all over the world.

Even though Pokémon Go does not give you many of these options it still offers the perks of a fun, free addictive “Gotta catch em all” type game. It also induces exercise as it makes you travel far and wide looking for Pokémon that only live in certain regions of your city, it also reaches a whole new demographic of people who do not play console games.

For the moment both Pokémon games are effectively complementing each other. However, the introduction of Pokémon Go on the Apple Watch and the new updates that will let you trade and battle with each other on their way, has Pokémon found a new home?
