How to Find Events in Canberra

No idea what to do this weekend? Me neither.

But I do know where to look. Here’s a handy ‘How To’ when you’re looking for some fun new activities to try out.

1.Facebook

Facebook should be your go-to when looking for thing on around you! It’s also the most user friendly site to access.

Log on to your Facebook homepage and under the Explore heading in the left margin you will find Events.

FACEBOOK LEFT MARGIN

This will take you to an events search engine. Scroll down this homepage to see categories such as Trending This Week, Popular With Friends, Recently Announced and Looking Ahead.

If you are looking for something more specific, narrow down your results by setting some search criteria. This involves nominating what TYPE of event you are looking for or WHEN it will be on.

FACEBOOK EVENT SEARCH

Once you select one of these criteria, for example ‘This Weekend’, you can further define the location and type of event using the filters down the left margin.

2. Actew AGL Community Switch

This one is an oldie but a goodie. The Community Switch will have details on much smaller and often more obscure events in the local community. These tend to be quite specific, such as DIY Workshops at Bunnings, Open Days and Charity Events. Often the less social-media savvy organisation will veer towards this platform.

COMMUNITY SWITCH

The community switch homepage has a list of events on for the week, easy if you’re looking for something coming up in the next few days.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for here, or want details for a specific event, use the search bar and each event links back to the original source and extra information.

3.Google

If all else fails, Google it! If this isn’t where you started it should definitely be your last resort. Googling an event you are already interested in might unearth some really helpful background information.

If you still haven’t decided what event to go to, typing in a basic phrase like ‘Canberra Events May 2017’ will serve you up a suite of websites detailing local happenings.

GOOGLE RESULTS CANBERRA EVENTS

The usual websites that you come across when looking for things to do in the Canberra region are Visit Canberra, Events ACT, Around You, Weekend Notes, Eventbrite and OutinCanberra.

From here, you will find more information by heading to the website of the organisation hosting the event. Heading to the homepage of Canberra Theatre Centre, National Convention Centre or GIO Stadium, for example, will give you more reliable information than that fan-run Facebook Event.
