What goes in to Stress Less Week?

As the end of semester approaches so do the deadlines for assignments and exams. With this increased work load there is also an increase in stress amongst students.

To try and combat this UC Life runs Stress Less Week during week 13, from 8th-12th May. During this week they have various events going aimed at reducing stress.

    • Monday, 8th May: Coffee, cake and colouring
    • Tuesday, 9th May: Paws the Pressure and a free barbecue
    • Wednesday, 10th May: Petting Zoo and sports carnival
    • Thursday, 11th May: Toasties and Chill
    • Friday, 12th May: Brumbies vs Lions

1 week left until Stress Less Week begins, who’s excited to have these super cute farm animals on campus for the petting zoo on Wednesday? ??????? #weareuc #uclife #stresslessweek

I sat down with Megan Rodd, Campus Life Coordinator for UC Life to find out what goes into organising Stress Less Week.

How do the various events get selected?

So usually we base it off what we did last semester, what went well and what didn’t. Based on how many students attended each event, and how they reacted to it. That will effect if we want to do that event again or not. In regards to the new events we talk to our volunteers, we have volunteer crew, that will give us some suggestions. We do a bit of research in to what some other universities do or other events that are run similar to this, get some ideas from that, and just basically anything we can think of that would, if I was a student, make me stress less.

If you go via the previous semesters events, does that mean they stay pretty consistent throughout the years?

Yeah some of them, like the Petting Zoo. I think we’ve had that every year for at least probably three years, but it’s probably the most important event, so if we got rid of it I’m sure there would be a bit of outrage.

So you say you measure the success by how many people show up?

Yeah, usually how many people come and also what were seeing on social media. There’s a hashtag, it’s usually like #stresslessweek we’ll have a look at that and see how many people are posting about it. We talk to people on the day and just see what they think, and you can usually tell just by the line up of people that are there.

So how does the week actually help students?

It helps the students because it reminds them to take a bit of a break from study. In that final week of classes we know that it’s very stressful, because everyones got so many assignments due and exams are coming up. It’s important not to get overwhelmed with study and just to take a break to pat a cute animal or have a free breakfast or something, but not take them away from study for the whole day, just a break.

Is that why they don’t go for the whole day and just in little segments?

Yeah and there all those events, like the Petting Zoo that’s there for four hours, but each individual person is probably there for less than 20 minutes.
