Review: DMA’s release For Now

After leaving fans waiting for two years and touring non-stop since their last album, Sydney-based band DMA’s have released their highly anticipated second album.

Bursting on to the scene thanks to Triple J in 2014 with their debut single “Delete”, DMA’s 2016 debut album Hills End was a hit with many comparing their sounds to 90’s Britpop icons Oasis.

Hot off the back of covering Cher’s “Believe” for Triple J’s Like a Version in 2016 (which saw them place 6th in the 2017 Hottest 100), the boys released four singles to promote their new album For Now throughout 2017 and 2018.

Opening with the title track, it’s clear to hear influences from UK based bands such as The Stone Roses and Oasis; the latter not being surprising given the band’s connections with frontman Liam Gallagher.

Though the album’s most upbeat track “Dawning” has been the most streamed single from the LP on Spotify, the most popular song from For Now on YouTube has been the slow-paced “In the Air”; the two tracks showing the broad spectrum of the band’s abilities to play to a mood.

Almost all 12 tracks seem to be about love, whether it be losing it or finding it. It’s been the mantra of DMA’s to play songs which would either be good for to listen to in the formative months of a relationship or while going through a break-up.

Finishing with the track “Emily Whyte”, For Now presents itself as one of the strongest sophomore albums in the Australian indie music scene, showing the band’s capability to keep riding the wave of success which formed in 2014.

Currently touring to promote the album, the Australian leg starts in early June where they’ll be playing at Splendour in the Grass before heading back overseas, doing a majority of their touring in Europe and the UK.

For Now is available on CD, vinyl and online via streaming or for purchase as a digital download.
