South Korea

By Jesse Kemp-Segedin

Team: South Korea

Nickname: Taeguk Warriors

World Cup appearances: 9

World ranking: 57

Coach: Shin Tae-Young

Captain: Ki Sung-Yueng

Player to Watch: Hueng-Min Son
The Tottenham Hotspur forward has excelled in his last two seasons in the Premier League, carving out a place in the English club alongside star forward Harry Kane. Son’s clinical finishing combined with rapid pace often proves too much for even the most experienced defenders. This World Cup means more to 26-year-old Son than most, as his playing future is in doubt because he faces two years of mandatory military National Service before he turns 28. Exemptions have been granted in the past to athletes who perform particularly well at major events. So look to see Son leave absolutely nothing on the field.

NowUC Predictor:
With defending champions Germany likely to take the top spot in Group F, it will be a scrap between the remaining three sides, Mexico, Sweden and South Korea for the second knockout qualifying spot. Unfortunately for South Korea, they are unlikely to progress through the group stages and even if they managed to reach the round-of-16, they are most likely to face tournament powerhouses Brazil.
