Introduction

The Bachelor of Communication in Journalism prepares students to be adaptable, reflective and skilled practitioners in a rapidly changing media environment. The degree reflects changing industry practices by integrating the teaching of journalism skills in print, video, audio and online formats. We offer reflective training in investigation, specialist forms of journalism, long form journalism and emerging digital techniques. Students will learn how to be adaptable practitioners in an industry which is undergoing rapid change. Students have access to industry standard broadcast and online facilities to produce and present their work. Staff bring a broad range of experience to their teaching – from newsroom journalism to more specialist forms of practice – and teaching is informed by cutting-edge research. Students produce news and current affairs stories in print, radio and TV disciplines for publication on the student journalism website.
The degree examines the role of journalists in the broader media context, and through journalism and communication theory, develops the ability of students to think critically, analytically and ethically. It integrates theory and practice so that graduates are informed practitioners who understand the broader context of their work. The major in Communication Studies provides students with foundational understanding of the communication industries, theories and research, while the major in Journalism offers more specific contextualised training in journalism. UC’s strategic location in the national capital and proximity to national institutions, including federal parliament and the parliamentary press gallery, offers learning and internship opportunities for students. The degree has a strong record for graduating students finding work in newspapers, radio, television, online and other media. As well as working in the news industry, graduates often gain employment with large organisations and government departments in media liaison, public information and publication officer roles.
