This year the Enlighten Festival gives everyone the chance to explore most of these buildings after their normal closing hours with special after dark tours.

Canberra couple Joe and Kathy decided to have a look around Parliament House and experience a night wondering around Australia’s most powerful building. “I haven’t been here for years but it’s so great to be able to come at night and look around and see where all the political action takes place.” Joe says. “For some reason learning about Australian history at night is more appealing but it’s a shame Julia Gillard isn’t here, would have been nice to see someone famous” laughs Kathy and Joe as they head into the House of Representatives.

The Enlighten Festival is in its third year with this the first year Parliament House has opened its doors for the festival. Further down the hill, the foreshore of Lake Burley Griffin is lit up from Questacon right down to The National Gallery of Australia. Many people are wondering around admiring the sites and the free entertainment.

As well as interstate visitors, Enlighten has attracted many local Canberrans to the foreshore to explore the light show in the centenary year including local Steve Clarke. “Canberra is such a nice city and having all these buildings lit up just shows off its beauty even more. Everything should be lit up all year around in my opinion.”

The Enlighten Festivalran from the 1st till the 9th of March on the foreshore of Lake Burley Griffin.
