Canberra Sunset Cinema Review

The Sunset Cinema has come to the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra and for 2013 is showing various films three nights per week. There are a few days left with it running until the 16th of March.

I went along on Saturday night to see ‘Life of Pi’ with gusty winds and the sky threatening rain. The film was fantastic and there were moments where I actually forgot that I was outside. That is, until a scene would fade to black and suddenly the trees, the deckchairs and the occasional bat flying overhead would come flooding back into sight.

I went armed with two jumpers, thick socks, cushion and a woolly blanket, but I couldn’t resist the temptation of a cold beer once I’d settled down on my picnic rug.

At only $15 for a ticket, and the ability to bring any food along with you, it was a great night out (that was within even a pathetically small student budget).

For all you romantics out there, this would be great for a date. It’s got everything you need; moonlight, stars, alcohol and the cooler temperatures give you the excuse to snuggle.

The gates open at 7pm but the film doesn’t start until 15 minutes after sunset which, on Saturday, was around 8.10pm. It’s a good idea to get there early to grab yourself a good viewing spot.

The Sunset Cinema provides a fun, relaxing night out and I highly recommend that people go along before it packs up for the season.
