Jerrabomberra Community Fair

The residents of Jerrabomberra showed their community spirit recently with a very successful turnout at the local Community Fair.

The Rotary Club of Jerrabomberra Community Fair was held at the Jerrabomberra Community Centre from 9am-3pm on Saturday 23rd March.

Children’s rides, an art show displaying Jerrabomberra Public School class artwork, a raffle, three arts and crafts stalls, a cod fishing competition in Jerrabomberra lake, a second hand bookstore and a sizzling barbeque were a few of the things on offer to the community throughout the day. A live band entertained the crowds, both young and old, over the course of the day.

Jerra School Painings-2The art show is a large part of the annual Fair scene with artwork on display from each class at the Jerrabomberra Public School. Teachers and student’s have approximately four weeks to put together a piece of artwork based on a theme to display to the community at the Fair. This year’s theme was ‘Tributes to an Artist’. A silent auction will be held in a few weeks to sell off this artwork and the funds from the sales will contribute to further Rotary Fair projects.

President of the Jerrabomberra Rotary Club and Jerrabomberra Public School Principle, Chris Hunter said the day was a huge success both financially and socially.

“The day brings the community together for a common purpose; local people get to promote what they do and it is a very social, fun, family day,” said Mrs Hunter.

“The Rotary committee is excited to get the local community project underway and hopes the people of Jerrabomberra will enjoy the changes to the suburb’s landscape.”

Haley Chaplin, a grade three teacher at Jerrabomberra Public School, said many students’ enjoyed bringing their parents, grandparents and relatives to the Fair to show them their classes’ artwork.

“Each student in every class across the school is able to participate in producing the final piece of artwork that goes on display at the Fair. The student’s brainstorm ideas and then work together as a team to produce the artwork,” Ms Chaplin said.

“I saw many of the student’s I teach throughout the day, enjoying the sunshine with their families and proudly showing them the artwork they helped contribute to at school.”

The Jerrabomberra Rotary committee, which has held the Fair for ten years, raised over five and a half thousand dollars on the day. That amount was an accumulation of the sales from the barbeque and the second hand bookstore. Local members of the community were able to set up a stall in an allocated space for $30 to display their goods. The committee also took a portion of this cost.

The money raised will be put towards the funding of a local community project in Jerrabomberra. The Rotary committee
