As Canberra celebrated its 100th birthday over the weekend many special events were held to commemorate the milestone.

While these events may have caught the attention of the locals over the weekend they are now over. Despite this Canberra still has plenty of great attractions to see.

Canberra, as the nations capital is the home to many significant tourist attractions. Yet, Canberrans as locals rarely visit these important locations.

Following are five top attractions that Canberrans should re-visit when they have free time.

  1. The Australian War Memorial is filled with important Australian history. The museum covers Australia’s involvement in war from Colonial times in 1788 right through to our current peacekeeping efforts. While in the main the Memorial remains the same, it is always offering special exhibitions and displays that add something new to every visit.
  2. The National Film and Sound Archive is a great place to visit especially for history and media lovers. Describing themselves as “the nation’s living archive, collecting, preserving and sharing our rich audio-visual heritage” the place is the home of a very unique and interesting collection of Australia’s history.
  3. Parliament House is a must visit for local political buffs. Parliament House offers a wide range of tours for people to get an insight to the running of democracy. Self, group or personalised tours are all available, meaning you can tailor your visit the way you want it. Another great aspect to Parliament House is the ability to sit in on Question Time. The way politicians attack each other these days it can make for an entertaining afternoon.
  4. The National Zoo and Aquarium has a great central location which means people from all around Canberra can visit it. As the only combined Zoo and Aquarium in Australia there’s plenty to do.   5. Finally, for those with a love of sport the Australian Institute of Sport is a world-class facility on your doorstep. You have the opportunity to take a tour of the precinct, personally guided by an elite athlete.
