Top 5 Game Shows for Resurrection

Game shows are awesome. Who doesn’t love pitting their wits against a complete random from Nowra as he attempts to win $5000 dollars and a new car by answering a series of general knowledge?

Back in the 1990s, Australia had some really awesome game shows, however, in the mid to late noughties a lot of these classic shows were inexplicably shafted by

their respective networks and were replaced by a newer, yet clearly inferior game shows in what can only be described as incredibly shorted sighted decisions on the part of the networks.

With that in mind here are the top 5 game shows that deserve to be resurrected on Australian television. If you wish to find out more about these game shows their titles are hyperlinks to Wikipedia articles.

  1.  A*mazing This is probably the best kids game show in the existence of Australian television history. It involved kids competing against each other in awesome contests like Mario Kart contests on the SNES and then going through this ridiculous maze in the search of Golden Keys.  This game was so intense and often made riveting viewing.
  2. The Weakest Link This show was awesome, partially because contests basically had to rag on each other at the end of every round and also because the host Cornelia Frances was so terse with contestants. The accumulation of money and points in this game was based on every contestant getting a series of consecutive questions right and if somebody got an answer wrong during the round before “banking” the money, the went back to zero for that individual round. I never really understood why Channel 7 decided to say “goodbye” to this show.
  3. Who wants to be a Millionaire Yes, I’m aware we have Millionaire Hot Seat, but while hot seat may be fast paced and compact, it lacks the tension that was the hallmark of the original show. I also liked that the fact during the original longer show you could become more accustomed to the contestant’s individual personality.
  4. Burgo’s Catch Phrase. This show dominated. Basically involved three contestants being presented with visual puzzles that were representative of popular phrases and words. Basically it was really entertaining because it was an unique game, plus most of the contestants were house wifes and old people.
  5. Sale of the Century This was the crème dela crème of game shows. The format was simple and it was a game that truly tested everyone’s general knowledge. Unlike a lot of game questions address a tonne of different topics.  The theme song was also awesome as were the prizes on offer from the holidays overseas to all those Audi cars. It came back as Temptation during the mid noughties and then was cancelled again in 2009.
