Top 5 Tips Sydney-Canberra Bus

I seem to live on the bus between Sydney and Canberra. Part of this is because I am an aspiring sports journalist I travel up to sports events in Sydney almost every weekend. Here are my top five things to do during a bus trip between Sydney and Canberra.

  1. Sleep. This is one of my favourite things to do on a bus as it’s both relaxing and practical. Generally most coaches have relatively comfy seats so if you’re on the early morning bus to Sydney after a particularly wild Thursday night in Civic you have more than enough time to recuperate before you arrive to continue extended weekend bender. Similarly, when you’re asleep the time just flies because you become completely oblivious to your surroundings (just keep your valuables close by).
  2.  Television. Before you leave on your merry way, I recommend that you stock up a USB or external hard drive with your favourite TV show and/or movies and watch them on

your laptop or tablet. A three and a half hour trip is an excellent opportunity to catch up on that riveting tele-drama you’ve been meaning to watch every night but haven’t had the time. Just remember to ensure your computer is fully charged before you leave the house, you don’t want your battery dying on you with 90 minutes left in the trip.

  3. Music. This is an obvious one but it’s still great. Sometimes on a bus trip I just pop my I-pod on shuffle and watch the scenery pass by. Alternatively, if you’re not in the mood for music listening to a good audio book can be a great as well. Just lie back in your seat, close your eyes and let your imagination do the rest, you’ll be at your destination in no time.
  4. Smartphone Apps. You would not believe how quickly time goes past when you fiddle with social media. At the start of the journey post a tweet and/or a couple of facebook statuses and then sit there for the next couple of hours continually refreshing the apps on the odd chance that someone may respond. It sounds ridiculously pathetic, and it is, but it passes the time.
  5. Study. Surely not, I can’t be suggesting that you do you do your homework on a trip away from uni. Well folks, the way I see it catching a bus can be a very time consuming process and if you want to make the most of it and try to get some work done so you can enjoy your time away from Uni without having to worry about the work waiting for you when you return back to Canberra. Think about it, if you’re planning an especially big weekend and don’t want to come back to a massive pile of work this is a good way to go about things. Obviously it’s almost impossible to do a research assignment on a bus but I often find the time to smash out a story or two while on the way to and from Sydney. I doubt you’ll ever be desperate enough to do homework though.
