New QLD legislation bans alcohol and chocolate
New legislation passed by the Queensland government implies a ban on innocent products like chocolate, saffron, herbal medicines and alcohol.
Recently passed Criminal Law Amendment Bill 2012 bans substances that have the ‘intent’ of being similar to banned drug.
Active chemical ingredient in chocolate, phenethylamine, is a dopamine similar to those found present in methamphetamine or cocaine. Methylated spirits and rubbing alcohols should be made illegal under the act, as well as chemicals found in common herbal cold and flu medication such as Echinacea and Tryptophan.
The laws are in place to target new synthetic drugs available on the legal market, but have been criticized as ‘nanny state’ legislation.
