Top 5 Canberra Bands to Check Out

Canberra’s musical scene, despite the views of many interstate visitors, is exploding! Some of our previously hidden musicians are emerging, and a few are getting some serious attention. Check out the Top 5 Canberra acts you need to know about.

1. Fun Machine

The name really does describe it all, doesn’t it? Melodies are spritely but never sickly sweet, and there’s a warm, homeliness to their music. You can listen to more of Fun Machine’s music at their triple j Unearthed page.

2. SAFIA

This electronic trio really know how to get that pulsing groove right. Winner “Stretched & Faded” certainly won’t make you feel faded – in fact, if anything you’ll feel more alive than ever (especially if you caught it live at Groovin’ The Moo!). Check out SAFIA’s tunes (and some free downloads) over at their triple j Unearthed page.

3. Citizen Kay

Kay is a charismatic guy. There’s no two ways about it. And while he might still be making leaps and bounds with his technical abilities, “YES!” is a fine tune that’s hard to not marvel at. Let’s hope his momentum only continues to build. Feel free to check out his other tunes.

4. Elisha Bones

Elisha Bones know their stuff, and in a live setting – they’re mind-blowing. Their “indie rock” feels much more mature than most of their contemporaries, and while they’re yet to translate their live energy into a studio recording (not as an easy feat for even the most experienced of bands), it sounds like they could be well on their way. Take a listen to “Guts”.

5. Super Best Friends

Super Best Friends are the band you want to be dancing along to on a Friday night as you purge all of the 9-5 full-time work demons from your tired body. Except, you’re never really that tired when you’re around these guys. The epitome of fun rock. If you haven’t seen them – or even heard them before – sort yourself out.
