The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Review

The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro directed by the aptly named Marc Webb is a surprisingly witty sequel. It contains stylised action which is a little unfeasible, but such is the nature of the super hero genre. Andrew Garfield, who plays the web-slinging vigilante, gives a diverse and convincing performance. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for Tobey Maguire in the original trilogy, who portrayed a far less likeable version of himself with super powers.

The series has completely re-invented itself, with more of a focus on the mystery behind Peter Parker’s parents and why they abandoned him in the first place. Emma Stone offers a seamless performance as Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man’s first love in the comic book series. It was delightful to watch their chemistry unfold on the big screen. Spider-Man 2 accommodates well for people who enjoy both action and romance entwined into one viewing experience.

The only real negative aspects of the film were the special effects behind Electro’s appearance and the seemingly endless supply of villains. Jamie Foxx succeeded in evoking sympathy for the character of Electro, but the special effects were a real distraction from his overall performance. In addition, every time Electro opens his mouth it sounds like he is speaking into a metallic fan. Most of the villains were really difficult to take seriously, including the Green Goblin and Rhino, due to their ridiculous appearance.

As the plot unfolds, we discover that no matter how hard he tries, Spider-Man is not able save everyone. In the previous film, this is also the case as he blames himself for the death of Uncle Ben and George Stacy. The most visually stunning scene is also the most emotionally harrowing, so be on the lookout for a slow motion sequence. Overall, it was an emotionally charged and action packed 142 minutes.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5
