Ásgeir’s debut english album ‘In the Silence’

Hailing from the land of Björk, Of Monsters and Men, and Sóley comes a new addition to Iceland’s already successful indie music scene. 21 year old Icelandic singer, Ásgeir has released his debut English album titled ‘In the Silence’, taking his country and the indie scene by storm with his folk-infused ethereal electronic sound.

The indie folk album is a translated version of his album Dýrð í dauðaþögn which won him the title of the biggest selling album in Iceland for a domestic artist.

This is the first time his hauntingly beautiful music has been heard in English.

With lyrics written by his poet father and translated into English by American musician John Grant, ‘In the Silence’ combines Icelandic folk sound with smooth electronics, reminiscent of a Scandinavian Bon Iver meets Mumford and Sons.

His folk fusion sound finds a union between his upbeat melodies and smooth electronic tones, seen best in ‘King and Cross’. This track evoking a very MGMT-esque feel with its use of electronica and pulsing melodies.

‘Going home’ channels a much more ominous electronica tone, Ásgier introducing a intrinsically brooding sound to his folk interpretation.

Whether or not the indie folk sound is your scene, Ásgeir debut album ‘In the Silence’ has a uniquely fused sound that should not be overlooked.

Ásgeir will be coming to Australia for the Splendor in The Grass festival and two side shows in Melbourne and Sydney this July.
