Lone Survivor Review

Lone Survivor is a film based on a true story of the events that occurred to a team of four navy seals (played by Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster and Emile Hirsch) on operation “Red Wings”, set in motion to capture Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. It follows the team through the operation, which goes horribly wrong when three goat herders (and Taliban fighters) stumble across the Seal team.

The cinematography of Lone Survivor is impressive with wide shots of a silhouetted Black Hawk following the seal training process at the beginning of the film, which creates a good visual crossover from documentary footage. The film is given a sense of scale by blending scenes filmed from a first person perspective with the stunning shots of the landscape.

I assumed this would be a typical action movie, but plot twists and excellent cinematography combined to make the story one of human interest and perseverance under extreme circumstances.

The Afghan characters create a surprising dynamic to the regular ‘high concept’ action movies where civilians are background or passive ‘victims’. This a central point in the film and is in stark contrast to the failed operation and the lack of military response.

Lone Survivor is an action-packed story of survival and perseverance in the face of great odds brilliantly filmed and featuring great actors this film is not one to be missed.
