Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, Album Review

Andrew McMahon album cover

Former Jack’s Mannequin and Something Corporate frontman, Andrew McMahon is back and better than ever with his new album ‘Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness’.

With a sound not dissimilar to his ‘Everything in Transit’ glory days, this album will not only satisfy, but cause bouts of nostalgia that bring you back to the days of Dark Blue and The Mixed Tape.

For new listeners, prepare for a musical experience like never before.

Despite being compared to artists like The Rocket Summer and Windsor Drive, McMahon manages to produce a sound that is so uniquely him that it could never be mistaken for anything else.

As soon as the first notes from the piano hit you, you’re taken on a journey. Canyon Moon, the opening song from the album is a joyride in a flashy convertible through the backstreets with the top down, the wind rushing through your hair, and it’s the first of many incredibly stunning songs from an album that does not stop giving.

Cecilia and the Satellite, the first single from the momentous album, boasts poetic lyrics such as ‘For all the places I have been, I’m no place without you.’ and has a slightly haunting sound to it, yet McMahon uses that sound and turns it into one of the most prolific, genuinely beautiful pieces of music not only on the album but within the entire genre.

Each and every track on the truly spectacular album is a merit to McMahon whose musical talents are not to be trifled with.

The album ends on a high note with Maps for the Getaway, a song with a catchy drumbeat and a truly successful hook that leads into what is definitely one of the best choruses on the whole album, leaving his listeners with the definitive message ‘All we have is time’, and a serious case of goosebumps.

Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness is a truly magnificent album, and is an incredibly strong debut offering from the talented McMahon.
