The annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras took place on March 8 celebrating the diversity and individuality of the LGBT community.

Here is a selection of five films that explore the obstacles the community encounters on the way to even greater acceptance in society.

 

Boys Don’t Cry (1999)

Boys Don’t Cry is a tragic romance film about transgender man Brandon Teena who was brutally assaulted, raped and murdered by his acquaintances. It looks into the social stigma against transgender people, self-acceptance and empowerment in an unforgiving world.

Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Brokeback Mountain details the love between two cowboys across 20 years from 1963 in the American West. The movie explores repression, sexuality and masculinity in an unyielding hyper-masculine environment that eventually caused the romance to unfold into a tragedy.

Philadelphia (1993)

Philadelphia is about a gay man with AIDS who fought against inequality amid distrust, fear and hostility towards the gay community after being wrongfully dismissed for who he is. It is a story of courage in the face of injustice, adversity and discrimination.

The Hours (2002)

The Hours looks into a day in the lives of three women across the 20th century and how their day unravels into a reflection of their existence. It touches on American society’s slow but gradual acceptance to the LGBT community, women empowerment and femininity.

Transamerica (2005)

Transamerica depicts the challenges transgender woman, Bree faces upon discovering that she fathered a son as they go on a road trip from New York to Los Angeles. The journey encompasses self-discovery, gender identity and transformation as Bree reaffirms her individuality at the end of the road.
