Peter Moody the Real Winner of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival

Last Saturday’s Schweppes Stakes Day at Royal Randwick marked the end of the 2015 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

There were 20 group one races across the carnival and also a whopping $26.5 million in total prizemoney up for grabs.

Discussion about the tournament’s popularity took a back seat as headline trainers Chris Waller, John O’Shea, Gai Waterhouse and Peter Moody displayed the talent in their stables.

Between the four of them, these trainers won the majority of the carnival’s races this year.

It is difficult to say that any achieved more success than Moody.

Of the four, Waller had 107 runners, the most of any of these trainers.

He notched up 10 wins with two group one winners and a 9.34 percent strike rate – a slightly underwhelming percentage based on his lofty standards.

John O’Shea, who is responsible for the Australian network of horseracing’s largest international stable ‘Godolphin’, managed a fairly successful autumn.

Godolphin scored 12 wins from just 61 runs including three group one wins giving the stable a 19.67 percent strike rate, the second best of the carnival.

Overall, O’Shea will be happy with how the carnival unfolded, but considering the size and wealth of Godolphin, perhaps they could have done better.

Racing’s first lady Gai Waterhouse had yet another outstanding Autumn Racing Carnival.

She took 10 wins from 72 runs with four group one wins and a strike rate of 13.88 percent, including The Golden Slipper, the world’s richest race for two-year-olds.

She has now won that race an incredible six times, equaling her father’s record.

Despite this, her success this Autumn does not compare to that of Peter Moody.

Although he had the lowest amount of wins of the four trainers his strike rate was superior.

Moody had five wins from 18 runs, with three of these wins at group one level, leaving his stable with a strike rate of 27.77 percent.

Considering the size of his stable compared to the others, this record is outstanding.

Moody clearly knows what it takes to win the big races and his success this Autumn must place him among the best trainers in Australia.
