Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt breaks through Netflix

Fresh off her successful sitcom, 30 Rock, Tiny Fey along with Robert Carlock have created the new series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt exclusively for Netflix viewers.

The new sitcom was originally made with association by NBC Studios to air on the network as a 13 episode straight series order under the old title Tooken. However the show never materialised and was changed to its current title before being sold in a two-season order to Netflix.

With the streaming giant already boasting the critical acclaimed dramas Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, this is the first original sitcom exclusively made for Netflix viewers. Just like the aforementioned titles, all 13 episodes of this first season were released all at once and for this show it works perfectly.

The series involves 29 year old Kimmy Schmidt as she adjusts to life in New York City after being rescued from an Indiana doomsday cult. The pilot introduces the story with the cult’s rescue from an underground bunker in which Kimmy and three other women were held by Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne for fifteen years. This is where Kimmy decides to restart her life by moving to New York City.

Upon arriving she quickly finds herself a new roommate, a struggling actor Titus Andromedon, and gains a job working as a nanny for the out of touch socialite Jacqueline Vorhees. With the help of these people, the series sees Kimmy struggle to adapt to an unfamiliar world and jump start the adult life that she had been dreaming of.

The Tina Fey created sitcom features her old 30 Rock co-star Jane Krakowski and breakout newcomer Tituss Burgess. However the main star of this show is lead actress Ellie Kemper.

Kemper who has made a living playing that weird girl next door type character does it again here and plays the role perfectly. With some topics being dark in the film such as manipulation, kidnapping and trauma Kemper has been able to keep a light perspective of things with the in your face optimism that feels both genuine and funny.

The star’s potryal signifies the character’s personality perfectly as she is able to keep that sad optimism that makes the viewes root for her, much like 30 Rock’s Liz Lemon, while also having weird reactions to normal things like smartphones (“Wow! Is this a Macintosh?”), Velcro and making up words such as “Tooken”.

Just like Tina Fey’s previous creation, the jokes are hit and miss at first instance. However a second or third viewing allows all the jokes to set in where it becomes more appreciated which is where the streaming output becomes advantageous for this new sitcom.

Much like the NBC hit series 30 Rock, Tina Fey’s new creation follows the same humour and format. Just like the previous effort, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will get you laughing and wanting to watch multiple viewings while repeating some of the catchy one liners as well as the theme song.

Be sure to add this to you must watch list on Netflix.
