The human brain has always been a mystery to modern science and after thousands of years of research many still do not know what is happening inside their heads.

Dr John Medina, molecular biologist from the University of Washington, attempts to shed light on the matter and pull together the best scientific research into the brain and its functions. Divided up into 12 rules, the book explores the main influences of brain function – from exercise to attention, sleep to exploration. The book is at the cutting edge of neuroscience, backed up by peer-reviewed scientific journals from a wide variety of sources.

Writing Style

It is a well-written account of how to enable your brain to make the most out of everyday situations and offers tips to survive and thrive at work, home and school. Particularly for students, the book explores ways in which you can navigate through stressful situations, such as exams or assignments.

An example is the extraordinary benefits that exercise has on the brain. Just 30 minutes of exercise three times a week not only improves cardiovascular health but also enables significant cognitive improvements when compared to stagnant brains.

Verdict

The format is reasonably readable and Dr. Medina adopts a refreshing style that presents information in a logical way, however some of the messages seem to get a bit lost in the science that sits behind. Finding the balance between the detailed neurological research and an accessible, easy to understand format is a bit confusing in parts of the book. However, the overall message is clear and the most relevant and important information is summarised in a box at the beginning of each new rule.

Anyone looking to get a little bit more out of their brain should give this book a go.
