Kathryn Selby Q&A

Selby & Friends is a live classical music company, that has been playing in the Canberra region since 2007. Currently playing exclusively at the National Gallery of Australia from the 9th of February to the 23rd of November. Selby and Friends are currently touring Australia, playing at Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Turramurra, the Southern Highlands and Canberra.
Kathryn Selby, is the Artistic Director and pianist for the group.
What is it that you enjoy about Canberra?
Kathryn Selby: I have always found Canberra audiences to be particularly open and warm, it is in Canberra that I experienced my first question from the audience within an evening concert setting and this has set the tone for all my concerts in Canberra – they are very open, friendly, welcoming and the audience is aware I believe that we are delighted to be among them.
As a classical music company, Selby & Friends play a range of classical music such as Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Brahms. How do you decide what to play?
Kathryn Selby: It’s a long process based on experience, knowledge of the performers involved and what the series as a whole may need. There is also welcome negotiation with the performers in order that everyone is happy with the program.
Where would you like to see Selby & Friends in the future?
Kathryn Selby: Perhaps in a larger venue that as yet is not built in this city. Or perhaps doing multiple concerts as we do have sell out performances at the moment and I hate turning people away.
