Spec Ops: The Line Review

Spec Ops: The Line is a great game. It has solid characters, an interesting storyline, and forces the player to make difficult decisions.

The game is a third person cover based shooter, set in a world where the city of Dubai is almost completely destroyed by sandstorms.

The combat in the game is average. Most of the guns don’t really feel different to use, and shooting enemies doesn’t seem to make any real impact, until they just suddenly drop dead.

It’s the decisions the game forces the player to make that are the real strong point of the game. Each time the game forces the player to choose one of two options, the choices are always very difficult to make.

One choice you have to make is whether to shoot a man that betrayed you, or let him burn to death. This man ruined the water supply for the entire city, doomed over 4000 people to die, and almost killed you. As he is trapped under a burning truck he asks you to shoot him so he doesn’t burn alive. He is an awful person, but does anyone deserve to burn alive?

There are a variety of tough choices like this throughout the game, and which options you pick will affect how your character develops. Making violent or immoral choices will lead to your character acting more aggressive and violent towards others.

Spec Ops: The Line is overall a very good game. It has a rich, immersive story with tough choices that help to give the player a sense that their decisions matter. While the game is emotionally intense, it is a game that I strongly recommend to anyone who enjoys shooting games.
