Top Five Pokémon Spin-off Games

It’s been twenty years since we first set our eyes upon Pokémon, a JRPG that had you catching adorable monsters and using them to battle, aiming to become the Pokémon Master! The Pokémon universe has expanded over this time, with a bunch of spin-off games from puzzles to fighters. So what should you play? These are the top 5 spin-off games you need to get your hands on.

5. Pokémon Ranger Series (3DS/DS)

Pokémon Ranger is an action role-playing game where instead of being a Pokémon trainer you are (you guessed it) a ranger, capturing Pokémon with your “capture styler” (the Nintendo DS’s stylus) rather than Pokéballs. It can be quite challenging at times and there’s plenty of puzzles for you to solve as you explore the world meeting various species of Pokémon. It’s one of the more simpler spin-off games, mostly intended for children but there is plenty of fun to be had.

4. Pokémon Picross (3DS)

Now I know that straight away you will be thinking “Really? This puzzle game is on the list.” but Pokémon Picross has the perfect balance of difficulty and fun that makes you never want to get your hands off of it! It was released in late 2015 for the 3DS and it involves you, the player, completing visual puzzles that reveal a Pokémon illustration. There’s a mixture of quick and long puzzles, ranging from five minute completion times to thirty and if you ever feel stuck you can use your Pokémon’s abilities to lend an extra hand. The game also includes daily puzzles and best of all, it’s free!

3. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Series (3DS/DS/GameBoy Advance)

Becoming a Pokémon is a dream I’m sure many five year olds have had but studio Spike Chunsoft made this a reality with Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. After filling out a personality quiz, you are assigned a Pokémon that matches your character. Using this avatar you enter randomly generated dungeons, attacking other Pokémon as you grab items and progress to the next floor. You may recruit others to assist you on your journey and as you enter each new level, the fights begin to get tougher and tougher. There’s a tonne of challenge packed into this dungeon crawler and plenty of content that should satisfy gamers for a while.

2. Pokken Tournament (Wii U)

Pokken Tournament is the most recent spinoff game that has you battling within arenas, performing perfect combos to pulverise your opponent. It works like many other fighters with your basic ranged, light and heavy attacks but each move is perfectly choreographed to dance across the screen as you deal heavy damage. There’s a strong range of characters from every generation of Pokémon and plenty of battles to be had in online and local multiplayer. If you want to feel like your in the midst of a battle, this is the game for you.

1.  Pokémon Snap (Nintendo 64)

Pokémon Snap is a fan favourite and people have been screaming out for a sequel since its debut in 1999. The concept is very simple; Let the game take you through a level on rails as you look around snapping your camera at every Pokémon in sight. Despite the gameplay being incredibly basic, you can’t help but love this game. The challenge to photograph every Pokémon in each level, trying to set up a shot that is visually appealing in addition to rewarding you with the most points and unlocking secrets within the multiple locations will keep you hooked for hours.
