Rio organisers feeling green over pool condition

By Tom Corrigan

Rio Olympic organisers are embarrassed yet again after both pools at the water polo and diving venues turned green.

Organisers say heavy rain over a couple of hours diluted the chemicals in the water, which has caused the shift in colour from a blue to a green hue.

While the change in colour may seem concerning for athletes and spectators, Olympic bosses maintain there is no risk to the competitors.

In an Olympic Games riddled with controversy over the facilities, this further indicates that the preparation and execution of the 31st Olympiad is simply not good enough.

The Olympics should be about celebrating athletes representing their country but the coverage of the poor facilities and planning of the games overshadows that aspect.

Before the Olympic flame was lit there was already controversy about the athletes’ village with the Australians among the most strident in their criticism of the unfinished and unsafe conditions.

The United States basketball team deemed the facilities in the village so substandard that they hired a cruise ship to use as a hotel during the games.

But it’s not just the accommodation that’s gone wrong in Rio. Athletes, including Australians, have been robbed and the venue construction has faced scrutiny following the collapse of the sailing ramp before a single boat began racing.

Whether the trend of failure will continue remains to be seen but don’t be surprised if there’s more drama from Rio.
