State of the art bouldering gym BlocHaus opened its doors to the people of Canberra on the 4th of April, and it is the first of its kind in the capital.

Not to be confused with a rock climbing gym, BlocHaus is a bouldering gym, containing over 600 square metres of climbing surfaces.

Bouldering is a fun social sport, where participants climb surfaces up to four and a half metres high, with no ropes or harnesses. The floor is surrounded with crash mats and pads so even if you do fall, you won’t get hurt.

The gym itself is located in Fyshwick and will have everything from personal training classes to a café.

Inga Wiechert, is one of the owners of the gym and has been working hard on opening the gym for the past 4 years.

“The kind of gym we’re opening are very popular and they have been around for quite a while in Germany, Europe and US,” said Inga.

“This style of modern bouldering gym is starting to take off in Australia and we’ve been planning this for four years.”

BlocHaus is all about having fun and encouraging people to be active, it will even be open late on Fridays with a DJ playing music.

“Here at BlocHaus you come and you’re going to meet some new friends, bouldering is a very social sport,” said Inga. “On Friday nights we’ll be open late with DJ’s playing and we have a café area where you can sit with your friends.”

Dylan Barton is a UC student who is also a passionate rock climber and he says BlocHaus will bring a lot to the local rock climbing and bouldering community.

“Being a rock climber in Canberra is hard, there aren’t many places where you can go and even less for bouldering,” Barton said.

“Having a bouldering specific gym in Canberra will be great for me but also will hopefully promote the sport in Australia.”
