Baker Boy Coffee- Q&A with the Owner and Director Sean Baker

Baker Boy Coffee is an organic cold drip coffee company which specialises in producing and retailing cold drip coffee at a wholesale level. They are currently distributing their coffee throughout the ACT and Central Victorian regions. I had the privilege of sitting down and conducting a Q&A with the Owner and Director Sean Baker. He told me about the background of the company, the reasons as to why it started and plans for further expansion in the future.
1) How did Baker Boy Coffee first start, and where did you get the inspiration for starting such a business?
Baker Boy Coffee started due to the search for the ‘perfect’ coffee. I had several years experience as a barista and I was excited by new innovations and new techniques for producing different coffee. I came across cold drip coffee and decided that this was the answer to the perfect coffee.
2) What are the main processes involved in producing your coffee?
Basically the cold drip extraction process is the lengthy version of filter coffee. Ice water is dripped through coffee grounds over a 10 hour period and it slowly seeps through into a flask as the final product.
3) What is cold drip coffee and how is it different to regular baked coffee?

Cold drip coffee is an alternate method that removes the acidic and bitter quality of regular heat extracted coffee. This means that you still get the same flavour profiles from the coffee but its much easier to drink and has many more health benefits.
4) How is your coffee unique in comparison to other established coffee brands?
We specialise in cold drip coffee and we have completed thousands of hours of testing to produce what we believe to be the best cold drip coffee on the market. Unlike our other competitors we only use specialty grade coffee beans. We have a specialized mix of water types and very strict filtering processes to ensure the highest quality product consistently.
5) What are the major health benefits for consuming this type of coffee?

Regular coffee releases harsh and bitters oils when being heat extracted, these oils can lead to various health issues such as heartburn, reflux and can also lead to the development of stomach ulcers. What’s so great about cold drip is you don’t get these harsh acidic oils but you still get the same caffeine hit and an even better taste. There’s been a lot of study behind this and we go into more detail about it on the blog on our website.
6) Where is the coffee being sold at the moment and how much does it cost?
We have a few different retailers across Canberra and Melbourne and for the full list our website has all the If you go on to the website we sell in 2 pack of the 500ml bottle for $30 or a 6 pack of the 100ml for $30
7) What are the current flavours you produce, any plans for more?

We have three different unique flavour profiles that we bottle. Our single origin features tones of rich stone fruits, florals and white peach. Our seasonal blend features dark chocolate, toffee and nut. While our Berry Blend has a strong berry aroma and tones of strawberries, wild berries and raspberry.
8) How do u plan to expand the business in the future? Any intentions of selling it around Australia and maybe even internationally?
At the moment we are focusing on expending our retailers within the Canberra, Melbourne area. We have plans to start shipping up the east coast towards Sydney and Brisbane as well. We are also interested in starting up a cafe for the company, which will act as HQ for the company also. This may get underway, early 2018.
