Colossal Film Review

Colossal, the latest work from Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo, hit the box office in early April 2017. The film centres around Gloria (Anne Hathaway), an unemployed journalist from New York who is re-evaluating her life and moves back to her hometown, where she is reunited with her childhood friend, Oscar (Jason Sudeikis). As a mysterious, Godzilla-like creature starts wreaking havoc on the distant city of Seoul, South Korea, Gloria realises that she is somehow connected to this creature, as it imitates her every move.

The trailer for Colossal suggested that the film was an action-comedy in which the reality of the situation was overlooked by the humour of the characters. Conversely, the film delivers quite the opposite. Although there are moments of amusement, the underlying themes within the film set a serious tone. At points it is obvious that Vigalondo tried to balance the two contrasting genres, however, due to the darkness of the characters and the situations they find themselves in, the amalgamation isn’t seamless.

Although the film doesn’t deliver on the original hype, it is far from a failure. Colossal offers action, paired with a deeper storyline that will still draw an audience. You may still find yourself asking the question ‘why?’ at the end of the film, but it is still entertaining nonetheless.

Colossal is in cinemas now.
