Enlighten Continued to Captivate the Nation’s Capital: Q&A with a Media Representative

The Enlighten festival is regarded as one of the most significant events in the Nation’s Capital. It is held every year in March, with this year’s event taking place from the 3^rd until the 12^th. From seeing amazing Architectural projections on six iconic buildings to the delicious Enlighten Noodle Markets, there is something for everyone to enjoy. I had the privilege of sitting down and conducting a Q&A with one of the media representatives of the event to discuss to her about the background, the planning and the improvements which are going to be made for next year.

Have their been any changes to this year’s festival in comparison to previous years?

This year, Enlighten displayed architectural projections on six iconic buildings within the Parliamentary Triangle, three of which were digital treatments, which is an increase on previous years. The projection company, the Electric Canvas, also created a soundscape for the projection suite featured on Old Parliament House. For the first time ever, Enlighten visitors were also able to see for themselves on the wall of the National Portrait Gallery; a photo booth allowed visitors to the event to snap a selfie, which would then roll up onto the facade of the building in digital picture frames.

Is there a particular reason as to why the festival is held at this time of the year as oppose to later on in the year?

March is typically a good month in Canberra to host an evening event. At this time of year, the weather is generally temperate, with daylight savings still in operation, providing longer light into the evening

What steps have being taken to control the consumption of alcohol, especially on the weekends?

Enlighten is a family friendly event, which has a diverse program offering that is suited to all ages. A security team is contracted for the duration of the event to ensure public safety, and Events ACT staff are onsite at all times, to mitigate any issues should they arise.

Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are available for purchase at the event,with alcohol typically sold in close proximity to food vendors. Any antisocial behavior due to intoxication is addressed immediately.

Would you consider having more “family-friendly” activities after dark?

Enlighten is programmed for all ages, with the majority of the events being family-friendly and suited to both children and adults, alike. With the aim to create lasting event experiences, Enlighten promotes culture and creativity for all.

What improvements could you make to the running of the festival in the future?

Each year, a post-event debrief is held, which involves the Creative Director of the event, participating national attractions, the Operations Team, Marketing Team and senior management of Events ACT. This meeting raises key event issues which we work towards strengthening for the year to come.
