Happy Gilmore: Review

If you haven’t seen Happy Gilmore yet, sit down and watch one of Adam Sandler’s masterpieces this weekend.

The film revolves around the loveable character Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) and his dreams of playing for the local hockey team. After he is cut from the team at tryouts yet again, Chubbs Peterson (Carl Weathers), a local golfing legend realises Happy can hit a golf ball longer than anyone else on the circuit. Chubbs invites him to a local golf tournament, and Happy obliges as he needs to win enough prize money to buy his grandmothers home which has been taken off her by debt collectors.

Happy Gilmore is a slapstick comedy that will have you laughing from tee to green. From the moment Happy tells us about all the jobs he had in the opening credits, where he always finding some work instrument to put in between his legs, you’ll have yourself in stitches.

However, this move still evokes deeper thought. Happy Gilmore takes viewers on an emotional rollercoaster. The plot line is arguably shallow, the production value isn’t high and the film is a little loose, but viewers should play it as it lies.

The sporting comedy was one of Adam Sandler’s first films and it’s left a strong legacy behind to this day. Known as one of Sandler’s best, the movie doesn’t take itself too seriously and is cherished by golf and non-golf fans alike. Overall it’s a movie about love, passion and sticking it to the man.

Score – A hole in one.
