Milky Chance to Blossom At GTM: Album Review

With Groovin the Moo less than a month away, many festival goers would be gearing up for one of the best events Canberra has to offer.

Every year Groovin the Moo hits the capital and showcases some of the best musical talent from both Australia and the world.

With previous acts like Flume, Golden Features and Client Liaison, Groovin never disappoints.

And this year is no different.

Dillon Francis, Tash Sultana and Violent Soho are just a few names who will be headlining this year’s festival, but another big act coming to Canberra is German folk group, Milky Chance.

Milky Chance first broke onto the music scene in 2013 with their hit, Stolen Dance and in the build up to their Australian tour they have released a new album called ‘Blossom’.

Milky chance’s unique sound is on full display in this album with their distinctive ‘euro-reggae’ mixture of both guitar and electronic music guided by the massive vocals of Clemens Rehbein, takes you on a musical journey.

Their biggest song off the album is Cocoon, which is the 9th song on the track and already has 9.5 million plays on YouTube.

The other half of the duo and producer, Philipp Dausch, told Genius.com that being in the studio was like being in a cocoon. When they are in the studio they just focus on the music and nothing else.

Other songs off the track such as Doing Good and Stay, have also had some air time on radio stations like triple J and have had a good response from fans.

Stay is one of the more raw tracks on the album in an instrumental sense with just an acoustic guitar and Rehbein’s distinct voice combing to strip down the layers and show the groups musical talent.

Blossom is the album’s title but it is also the first song on the track, and Rehbein says that the name came to be because of the events that had happened to them both musically and in their private lives over the past few years, in particular the birth of his daughter which was a big inspiration for the making of the song.

They feel as though things have been “blossoming” for them for a while.

With this year’s GTM line up being more band dominated than previous years, Milky Chance is one not to miss.
