Nintendo Switch Review

The first time I heard anything about the Nintendo Switch was a few days after its release, when people were licking the games cartridges because apparently, they taste awful. The day after that, one of my friends informed me he had forked out over $500 for this versatile console.

The screen is the main part of the console, reminiscent of when Apple first combined desktops with monitors. It is clear, and the console runs smoothly and quickly which can be played with connected controllers on either side (much like a PSP) and the controllers can be disconnected from the screen and attached to a controller mount. The controllers can also attach to wireless connectors that will allow you to play games without having your hands together in front of you. This seems a bit unnecessary, but I am reassured it’s super handy for the tired gamer who wants to lie down and not worry about controller positioning.

That brings me to the games. At the time of this review, there were only two games available for the Switch which are sold separately to the console for the same price as any other game (despite being pretty much the size of an SD card) which is around $80. When purchasing the switch I got one game included which was Zelda. The other game available is the new and enhanced version of the Wii Sports.

As a non-gamer, I have not played any version of Zelda before, and after playing it my knowledge has not changed. The graphics are detailed, and the world of Zelda seems endless and deep which also displays high quality graphics which enhances the gaming experience and makes people want to keep playing.

I died about six times at the same point. And it was at the first point you encounter a foe: a red, kind of cute, devilish looking creature called a Bokoblin. The tutorial messages in the game are helpful, and once I finally found my bearings (and worked out how to move and see with two different joysticks), I found myself enjoying it a bit more.

As fun as the Nintendo Switch is, I feel like it is better suited to people who want to relive the days of their youth as it plays on the theme of nostalgia by reintroducing older titles such as  Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart which will being released soon. By taking this approach they are trying to assert themselves in the market whilst also reaching out to older audiences whom are not renowned for playing many video games.
