The Lego Batman Movie Review

After hearing the mixed reviews on The Lego Batman Movie I was unsure as to whether I would like it, but I’m pleased to say I was blind-sided by how much I enjoyed watching it.

While slow to start, the movie picks up to a fast paced, witty and celebrity packed romp. Will Arnett voices the titular character and is easily the most brooding, solitary and indiscreet Batman yet. By his side is his endearing but annoying, accidentally adopted son Robin (Michael Cera).

The two pair up with Alfred, voiced by Ralph Fiennes, and the new Commissioner Gordon (Rosario Dawson) to fight the Joker (Zach Galifianakis) who has recruited all the Batman villains and a few from other franchises including Daleks, the Wicked Witch of the West and He Who Must Not Be Named, who is not voiced by Ralph Fiennes but instead Eddy Izzard.

The charm of the film comes from the CGI Lego presentation which allows for fantastic vehicles and scenery while also providing many jokes and the films ultimate resolution. The ability to poke fun at the tired Batman franchise and the conventions of the genre provides the majority of the film’s laughs.

The Lego Batman Movie is short and sweet; a funny, easy film that is best enjoyed with family.
