This Is Us: A guaranteed binge watch

A gripping and intensely emotional TV drama has hit Australian screens. The award-winning series  “This Is Us” bounces through different time periods following the story of three young individuals Kevin (Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz)  and Randall (Sterling K Brown) in present time, whilst simultaneously following the lives of a young pregnant couple, Jack (Milo Ventimiglia), and Bec (Mandy Moore) years beforehand in the 1970’s. The stories of these characters, who all share the same birthday intertwine into a common thread that dictates the series plot.

Creator of the television series, Dan Fogelman has created a complex and in-depth cast that allows an outside audience to relate individually to each character within the show.

Delving into some intense and relevant social issues, the show demonstrates the differences and similarities of these characters through the battles of their own individual struggles including issues with body image, racism, mental health, drug abuse, death and love.

The show manages to successfully jump back and forth between the different time era’s without confusing the audience, and this technique helps to progressively link together the significance between the past (Jack and Bec) and the present (Kevin, Kate and Randall).

The show is beautifully written, the addictive storyline leaves subtle hints throughout for audience members to piece together, which eventually connect together and leads up to the explosive (and heart-breaking) season finale.

Complemented by some outstanding performances from actors such as Mandy Moore and Chrissy Metz who were both nominated for Golden Globe Best Supporting Actress, as well as Sterling K Brown, who won a SAG nomination for Most Outstanding Male Actor in a Drama Series.

Although, whilst not formally recognised I must say and warn you, you will fall completely in love with family man Jack, whom is perfectly portrayed by Milo Ventimiglia.

“This Is Us” is a captivating series that has everything you want out of a good drama, a passionate love story, moments that make you laugh (and cry) out loud, insightful perspective and most importantly you will not be able to sit down and just watch one episode.

Luckily enough Channel 10 has already aired 9 episodes. So if you are late on the train, hop over to Channel 10 play and catch yourself up on a heart wrenching and inspiring TV series.
