Canberra Fashionistas Get Groovin

As the weather begins to cool, the yearly festival cycle transitions into a new round of events. Canberra’s turn came Sunday, with Groovin the Moo. Thousands of locals and interstate visitors turning out to watch artists such as The Wombats, DJ Snakehips, and Triple J favourite Tash Sultana take to the stage.

Nearly as important as the musical acts was the festival fashion. Despite the fresh temperatures, most female attendees spent the day singing and dancing in a dazzling assortment of sheer fabrics, lace, denims, and glitter. Male fashionistas were in most cases slightly more conscious of the 10° weather, choosing themed dressing which allowed for layering as temperatures dropped. A watermelon, sunflower, and an overall-clad farmer were all in attendance.

If you want to recapture the magic of this year’s Moo, or are still wondering what to wear to the upcoming show in Bunbury on the 13th May, you’ve come to the right place. Taking inspiration from some Canberra faves and babes, NowUC’s festival dressing guide has your perfect outfit sorted.

  1. Glitter for days.

As our city’s esteemed news publication noted, glitter played a key role in many of the outfits at GTM Canberra. Best part? Glitter can be applied to the face, legs, arms, shoulders, or hair. Even eyebrows were seen featuring a coat of sparkle. Glitter has the added benefit of being almost impossible to remove so it’s the perfect way to accidentally brighten up your pale-faced, morning-after vibe on Monday.

  1. Bralettes.

Forget shirts or tops, the humble bralette provided all the upper-body coverage needed this weekend. Triangular and strapless tubed styles in lace or cotton were particularly popular. Pair with body jewellery, a bandana, or the afore-mentioned glitter for fashion-forward styling. Fashion tape is your secret weapon when it comes to this look (there’s showing skin and showing skin).

  1. Sheers and lace.

For those ladies after an extra layer without compromising their lingerie-inspired look, sheer fabrics were Canberra’s fashionable concession to the cold. For tops, either a fitted or loose style was deemed acceptable, however only full-length dresses or skirts appeared to pass muster. The delicate femininity of the fabric was best paired with heavy boots, such as Doc Martins.

  1. Fishnets and denim.

An Instagram favourite, this look has become much loved by LA reality stars and Canberra music lovers alike. Ladies, please note however that only large-gauge netted stockings work for this look. For authenticity, button-up vintage Levi denim is a must. Worn best with runners or loafers, this iconic 2017 combo has just enough edge to make your outfit really ‘groove’.

  1. Glasses.

Eye-wear, both practical and fashionable was the most popular accessory of this year’s Groovin the Moo. Sunglasses were worn both day and night. Many festival attendees chose to continue wearing their shades after dark, even at the expense of clear vision. Also popular were kaleidoscope goggles, which for many added a new and exciting element to the festival’s visuals. Eighties dad-style frames were a clear favourite, because what’s more fashionable than a pair of glasses with no practical application beyond added aesthetic?
